Further information
Weather-appropriate clothing and shoes suitable for outdoor activities are recommended. A water bottle is advisable, especially on warm days.
To reach Vallisaari, access is only available via waterways. During the summer season, groups can arrive by scheduled ferry or alternatively, arrange transportation through us. In this case, the following information applies:
Arrival at Market Square: Near the pier area, there are no designated accessible parking spaces. You can find detailed information about parking options in the area on the City of Helsinki's service map. For drop-off, the vicinity of the Old Market Hall provides ample space. It's advisable to approach from the Old Market Hall side, as the route towards the pier area in the middle of Market Square is paved, transitioning to cobblestone only near the pier. The front of the pier area is otherwise accessible, with benches in the waiting area. There's a slight incline to the pier, but the pathways are wide, and manoeuvring is easy, even with assistive devices.
Boarding the Water Bus: The water bus Ilves has a wheelchair-accessible ramp, measuring 183 cm in length and 74 cm in width. The entrance level of the water bus has space for larger assistive devices, with over 150 cm turning space. The width of the staircase leading to the lower cabin is 170 cm, with handrails on both sides. There's a self-service refreshment area on the accessible level, but there is no accessible restroom on the vessel. However, an accessible restroom is available on Vallisaari upon arrival.
Exploring Vallisaari: The paths on the route are mainly gravel and sand, with no tree roots or similar obstacles. There are some hills along the route, with a few being steep. The inclines are marked on the map provided. Weather conditions affect the smoothness, firmness, and slipperiness of the pathways, so it's essential to consider the terrain when planning your visit and choosing assistive devices. Electric wheelchairs and other electric assistive devices are suitable for navigation on the island. Individuals using manual wheelchairs should be aware that having an assistant is generally necessary. It's also possible to move around the island with strollers. Vallisaari has cafes and a container restaurant with terrace seating. All cafes have elevation differences, but ramps are available for wheelchair users. Vallisaari also has accessible restrooms.
