Step into the turbulent year of 1918 and discover how the Finnish Civil War unfolded in Kirkkonummi. This guided bus tour explores the dramatic local events that shook the rural community during Finland’s struggle for independence.
You’ll learn what the Battles of Kirkkonummi really were — who was involved, what took place, and how global tensions from the First World War and the Russian Civil War influenced the situation in Finland. We also shed light on Finland’s position as a Grand Duchy under Russia, efforts to Russify the nation, and the growing fears of losing autonomy.
Local societal changes form an essential part of the story: the rise of workers’ associations, their goals for a fairer society, and the formation of the Kirkkonummi Civil Guard on the opposing side.
The tour is led by freelance historian Henri Rantanen, M.Phil., together with Petra Vairimaa, M.A., a local authorised guide. There will be time for discussion and questions.
